HVAC Efficiency & Cost-Value Guide (SEER2, AFUE, HSPF2)

What the efficiency ratings mean, how sizing affects your bill, and how to weigh upfront cost against lifetime savings.

Written by Kenneth Ferrell, Founder Updated June 2026

What the ratings mean

SEER2 measures cooling efficiency, AFUE measures furnace efficiency (as a %), and HSPF2 measures heat-pump heating efficiency. Higher is more efficient — but the right number depends on how you use the system and how long you'll keep it.

When higher efficiency pays off

If you'll stay in the home for years and run the system heavily, a higher-efficiency unit's monthly savings can outweigh its higher purchase price. For a short horizon or light use, a mid-efficiency unit may be the better value.

The sizing trap (failure mode)

Bigger is not better. An oversized AC short-cycles, never dehumidifies properly, and wears out early; an undersized one runs constantly. A proper load calculation — not a rule of thumb — is how you get it right.

Judging value, not just price

Compare total cost of ownership: purchase + installation quality + operating cost + expected lifespan + warranty. Financing can also change the monthly math.
