How Ductless Mini-Splits Work

Targeted comfort with no ductwork — ideal for additions, bonus rooms, and homes without ducts.

Written by Kenneth Ferrell, Founder Updated June 2026

What a ductless mini-split is

A ductless mini-split is a heat pump that skips the ducts: an outdoor unit connects by a small refrigerant line to one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor heads. Each head is its own zone with its own thermostat.

When ductless is the right tool

Mini-splits excel where ductwork is impractical or wasteful: room additions, finished attics/garages, sunrooms, older homes without ducts, and rooms that are always too hot or too cold. Zoning means you only condition the rooms you're using.

Failure modes to watch for

  • Water dripping from the indoor head — a clogged condensate line.
  • One zone underperforming — dirty filters on that head, or a charge issue.
  • Short line-set life — poor installation; mini-splits are install-sensitive.

Proof

We design and install ductless systems for tricky spaces across the region.
