How Geothermal HVAC Works

The ground a few feet down stays ~55°F year-round. Geothermal uses that stable temperature for ultra-efficient comfort.

What geothermal does differently

Geothermal is a heat pump that exchanges heat with the ground instead of the outdoor air, through a buried ground loop. Because the earth a few feet down stays around 55°F all year, the system never fights extreme outdoor temperatures — which makes it one of the most efficient ways to heat and cool a home.

When geothermal is worth considering

It's a strong fit for homeowners staying long-term, building new, or with land for a loop field — anyone prioritizing the lowest long-run operating cost and willing to invest more upfront.

Failure modes to watch for

  • Undersized or poorly designed loop — the system can't keep up in extremes.
  • Loop or pump leaks — rare but require specialized service.

Proof

Geothermal rewards careful design and installation.
